Oak Bowl, Natural Edge,
8 inches diameter X 3 1/2 inches high
This is another bowl  from a humongous oak that grew in front of a friend's house.  The tree, while not
extremely tall, was very large in diameter at it's base.  The tree had been standing dead for over a
year, so the wood was already beginning to dry and not showing the characteristic red color I've come
to associate with Red Oak, and while I'm not certain this is in fact a Red Oak tree, the characteristics
of the tree do indicate that it most likely is.
Red Oak or Champion Oak, Quercus rubra (syn. Quercus borealis), is an oak in the red oak group
(Quercus section Lobatae). It is a native of North America, in the northeastern United States and
southeast Canada. In forests, the northern red oak grows straight and tall, to 115 ft tall, with a trunk of
up to 3 or 4 ft diameter; open-grown trees do not get so tall, but can develop a stouter trunk, up to 6 ft
in diameter.
