| Oak bowl, Natural Edge, 9 1/2" diameter x 3 1/2" high, finished with sanding sealer and wipe on polyurethane This is a bowl from a humongous oak that grew in front of a friend's house. The tree, while not extremely tall, was very large in diameter at it's base. The tree had been standing dead for over a year, so the wood was already beginning to dry and not showing the characteristic color I've come to associate with White Oak, and while I'm not certain this is in fact a White Oak tree, the characteristics of the tree do indicate that it most likely is Quercus alba, the white oak, is one of the pre-eminent hardwoods of eastern North America. It is a long-lived oak in the family Fagaceae, native to eastern North America, from southern Quebec west to eastern Minnesota, and south to northern Florida and eastern Texas. Specimens are known to have lived over 600 years. The oldest tree in North Carolina is a white oak found at Tanglewood Park. Although called the white oak, it is very unusual to find an individual specimen with white bark; the usual color is a light gray. In the forest it reaches a magnificent height. In the open it develops into a massive broad-topped tree with great limbs striking out at wide angles Item Nr: 10-746 $75.00 |
