Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis of the family Platanaceae), one of
a number of woods commonly called Sycamore. The plane or
sycamore family --- although in the same family as South American
and Australian lacewood, it has significantly different color and
generally has much smaller rays. It is what we mean in the USA
when we say "sycamore".
Spalting is a fungal formation in woods that begins the process of
wood rotting or deteriorating and creates the interesting black line
patterns.

a very high polish. Often used in turnery, for knife handles, pens & pencils,
bird calls, walking canes and all forms of fancy woodwork.
